There is truly an art to being a good hostess (and a lot of hard work!). I have always admired the Martha Stewarts of the world who can throw together an elegant party and make it look so easy. Below are some tips that I have learned over the years on how to be a gracious hostess and I hope by sharing them with you that they can help you as well!
- KNOW YOUR GUESTS & WISHES FOR THE EVENT.
Are your guests women or a mix of couples? Are you having a seated dinner or a casual mingling? By planning ahead and knowing your guests (I always like to see if my guests have any dietary restrictions), you will be able to add more personal details to your gathering and they will feel appreciated with the time you took to make everything that much more special.
- KEEP FLORAL LOW.
If you are going to have floral arrangements on the tables, make sure they are low enough so that your guests can see each other. You want your guests to have good conversation with each other and not just the flowers.
- FORMAL TABLE SETTING.
If you are having a formal table setting, one easy thing to remember FORK:LEFT (both have 4 letters) and KNIFE:RIGHT (both have 5 letters). I say this little tip in my head even if I am setting a casual dinner table. Thankfully Google can be your best friends in times of forgetfulness!
- KEEP YOUR PHONE IN YOUR PURSE.
Yes, I am so #guilty of this but engaging in conversation requires both people to be active in the conversation. You could even make a fun “phone bowl” at the end of the table for guests to drop their phones in during dinner, that way they can enjoy each other and all of the hard work you put in to create the perfect environment. (Not saying there can’t be those moments where a picture is absolutely necessary – we bloggers are always looking for that perfect shot).
- ADD PERSONAL TOUCHES.
Whether it is your hand writing on the place cards or menus, little personal touches go a long way. Your guests will see how much work you put into making the gathering special and will appreciate it.
- ACTIVITIES ARE FUN!
I love having something fun for my guests to do – whether it is a flower crown making station or a place where they can create their own signature cocktail, an activity keeps your guests engaged (and they are occupied if you have to run to your hostess duties).
- BRING ON THE MOOD MUSIC.
Because no one likes an awkward silence.
- GOOD LIGHTING GOES A LONG WAY.
You don’t want anything too harsh or unflattering. If you need some extra lighting, choose some candles with scents that accompany your decor or go with the scentless tea lights (you can never go wrong with candles).
