As y’all know, I have been training for my first 5K, which is THIS weekend! The countdown is officially on. When I first started training, I didn’t put much thought into the shoes that I was wearing. My thoughts: “Are they cute?” “Do they match my outfit?” “Great. Let’s run.” I was so wrong. I should have put more time into choosing the right shoes for me and my running style rather than focusing on simply the “style” part. One stress injury later and I am a believer in the not-so-fashionable running shoe. Below are my top 5 tips so that you all don’t make the same (rookie) mistake that I did.
1 // JUST BECAUSE THEY ARE CUTE, DOESN’T MEAN THEY ARE MEANT FOR RUNNING
Yes, you know that I’m talking about. NIKE Frees. I am the first to say, they are adorable – probably the best looking athletic shoe out there – but they did a number on my feet while I was training for my 5K. I didn’t know the support I needed and therefore wound up in the pediatrist office (seriously). After that, I went straight to Luke’s Locker to get professionally fitted. While the pair I chose was not the color scheme I would naturally choose (unfortunately the top running brands care more about functionality than a wide variety of colors – bummer) they are the best shoes I have ever had. Flexibility, support, comfort, stability – my new Mizuno Wave Inspire 12‘s have everything I needed!
2 // KNOW YOUR FEET
Do you have a wide foot? Thin foot? High arch? Low arch? All things you need to know when picking out the right running shoe for you.
3 // LEAVE SOME WIGGLE ROOM
Experts say to leave half a thumbnail length from your big toe to the top of the shoe. Not too small, not too big, just right.
4 // BUY A NEW PAIR EVERY 400 MILES
If this isn’t inspiration to run more miles, I don’t know what is! Does anyone else love the smell of new running shoes?
5 // WHEN IN DOUBT, GET FITTED
There are so many great places to get fitted for your perfect running shoe. Stores are now being equipped with treadmills and playback screens so that you will get the perfect shoe for your foot shape and running style. Do a quick google search to find one in your area!
